Cisco says bookings worldwide rose 55 pct vs year ago

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov 6 (Reuters) - Cisco Systems Inc. , the world's biggest maker of computer networking equipment, said on Monday that bookings for its products worldwide surged 55 percent in its fiscal first quarter from a year ago.
Cisco's Chief Executive John Chambers made the comments on its quarterly earnings conference call. He also said that bookings rose in "double digits" in the first quarter from the year-ago quarter.

Cisco reported quarterly pro forma net income of $1.36 billion, or 18 cents a share, from $814 million, or 11 cents, a year ago. Sales rose 66 percent to $6.52 billion from $3.92 billion.

On that basis, the results topped the consensus analyst forecast of 17 cents a share, according to First Call/Thomson Financial.

AFTER THE BELL-Cisco falls but recovers on outlook

NEW YORK, Nov 6 (Reuters) - The shares of Cisco Systems Inc. fell but staged a dramatic recovery in after-hours trading on Monday after the world's largest maker of computer networking equipment upgraded its growth outlook in a post- earnings conference call.
Cisco posted quarterly earnings after-hours that just beat Wall Street's expectations by a penny, on 66 percent revenue growth. Shares initially rose then fell to $51-7/8 on the Instinet electronic brokerage system, down from a regular session close of $55-1/8.

But Cisco quickly clawed back most losses, to trade at $54-3/8 after the conference call began.

Analysts listening to the post-earnings conference call said the stock fell initially as investors digested the company's traditional conservative guidance and then sprang back to trade higher after its chief financial officer boosted that guidance to 50-60 percent for fiscal 2001.

The shares of VoiceStream Wireless Corp. rose, in relatively light after-hours trading, to $121 from a close of $117-3/8 on Instinet. Shares rose despite the wireless telephone company reporting a widened third-quarter loss. Subscriber revenues increased 215 percent on the same quarter in 1999.
