Bank.

Booming demand in Germany to boost solar earnings

* Yingli, JA Solar likely to beat Street view - StarMine
* Pressure on European manufacturers to remain - analysts

FRANKFURT/NEW YORK, July 19 (Reuters) - Strong sales of modules in Germany, the world's No.1 solar market, are set to boost revenues for the sector elite's in the second quarter but won't allay fears about weaker 2011 demand as incentives wane.

After a horrific 2009, top makers of the clean energy systems such as First Solar (FSLR.O), Renewable Energy Corp (REC) (REC.OL), Q-Cells (QCEG.DE) and Suntech Power Holdings (STP.N) have seen robust sales so far this year. ...

Back in November China announced plans to more than double its environmental protection spending through 2015, potentially amounting to $454 billion. According to Bloomberg, the government now plans to spend 5 trillion yuan, or about $738 billion over the next decade in an effort to reduce harmful emissions. Meanwhile, The Wall Street Journal reports that China is disputing International Energy Agency data that it surpassed the U.S. as the world's largest energy consumer last year.

It will be interesting to see whether any of the nearly quarter-trillion dollar clean-up spending will give a boost to the Chinese Solar Stocks Index, which has outperformed the S&P 500 by more than 20% over the last month. Today, 2010 IPO JinkoSolar Holding (NYSE: JKS - News) is the only notable winner, gaining 3% on sparse news as Suntech Power Holdings Co (NYSE: STP - News) and ReneSola (NYSE: SOL - News) sink by more than -1%.

Chinese wind shares spiked in overnight trading after Deutsche Bank put a Buy rating on Hong Kong-listed Xinjiang Goldwind Science & Technology and Shenzhen-listed China Longyuan. The firm cited growing power demand, rising coal prices, and strong government support for its optimism, according to coverage by Bloomberg.

The wind optimism didn't carry over to U.S.-listed shares as China-based A-Power Energy Generation Systems (NASDAQ: APWR - News) and China Wind Systems Inc (NASDAQ: CWS - News) gain only fractionally, and the Wind Energy Stocks Index slips for the session. Given that global giants like General Electric (NYSE: GE - News), Mitsubishi, and Siemens AG (NYSE: SI - News) are all fighting for market share, the largely fragmented small-cap space isn't a sure-shot for profits amid wind energy expansion.

China Overtakes the U.S. -- What Now?
Chalk up another milestone for China on its growth path. Yesterday, the International Energy Agency revealed that China overtook the U.S. in 2009 as the largest energy consumer in the world. In 2000, China's energy consumption was half that of the U.S. What are the implications of this formidable rise for investors?

Demand goes up … and so does competition
For starters, China represents an enormous growth market for energy companies, and increases in demand will help support commodity prices. I also expect China to continue vacuuming up energy assets all over the globe. It's a voracious and formidable opponent: China has a vital strategic need and deep pockets, and its companies are not always constrained by the same profitability requirements

Suntech Power
Even though Suntech Power's financial results took a hit from currency lossesin the first quarter, it still managed to deliver earnings that rose more than 10 times year over year, with revenue increasing 86%. Similar to smaller peer LDK Solar's (NYSE: LDK) bullish full-year forecast, Suntech bumped up its shipments forecast as it's seen strength in multiple markets. A similar tone was recently struck by Solarfun (Nasdaq: SOLF), which said it's mostly sold out of its capacity for the rest of 2010 and plans to increase capacity for next year.

Despite threats of a weak euro and declining solar subsidies, a lot of CAPS members remain bullish on the long-term outlook for Suntech; 96% of the 4,387 members rating Suntech Power believe it will be a market-beating investment.

Suntech Power Holdings (NYSE:STP) also broke the neckline of a small double bottom and has been holding above this level for a couple of weeks. While the near-term pattern looks pretty strong, traders should not lose sight of the fact that STP remains in a longer term downtrend. The projected target for this base would carry STP back up toward strong resistance. This doesn’t mean there isn’t a possible trade here, as long as traders understand that the immediate upside may be limited.

392 Postings, 5444 Tage phoenix.timChina's Energy-Efficiency Mandate

With China having now surpassed the United States as the world’s largest energy user, Alex remembered my comment, and in his article last week, recommended six Chinese companies: JA Solar; Suntech Power; Yingli Green Energy; Trina Solar; LDK Solar; and Solarfun Power. His reasoning was simple: “China’s growing appetite for energy in a world of finite traditional energy sources also creates an enormous opportunity for alternative energy solutions.”

China’s continued economic growth is one reason why it is now a larger energy consumer than the United States. Another, though, is the fact that the country has a long way to go in terms of energy efficiency. Fatih Birol, Chief Economist at the International Energy Agency, said last week: “In 2000, the U.S. consumed twice as much energy as China, now China consumes more than the U.S.” He went on to note that the U.S. had improved its energy efficiency by 2.5%  annually during that time, while China managed only a 1.7% annual improvement. Energy inefficiency is the reason it takes more energy to power a Chinese economy that is only one-third the size of the United States.

392 Postings, 5444 Tage phoenix.timSuntech erhält Großauftrag in Indien

WUXI, China and NEW DELHI, India, Aug. 3 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- Suntech Power Holdings Co., Ltd. (NYSE:STP - News), the world's largest producer of crystalline silicon solar panels, has signed agreements to supply Azure Power, India's leading independent solar power producer, with several megawatts of solar panels to develop utility-scale solar projects across several states in India.

The solar power plants will be owned, developed, and financed by Azure Power and will feature thousands of Suntech's industry-leading 280W polycrystalline solar panels. The first project is already under construction and additional solar power plants will be developed in early 2011.

Announcing the partnership, Mr. Inderpreet Wadhwa, CEO, Azure Power said, "Azure Power is excited to be working with Suntech, a world leader in solar PV modules. We believe that Suntech has superior crystalline silicon solar modules available in the market today and the know-how required for setting up large, utility-scale solar projects. Azure Power will continue to work with global leaders to deliver on our ambitious plans to reach grid parity with solar energy generation."

The clean and quiet solar facilities will supply thousands of local residents with reliable electricity for decades, especially during peak demand hours, providing a sustainable alternative to carbon-based energy production. According to the World Health Organization, air pollution is responsible for more than 500,000 premature deaths in India each year, with emissions from fossil fuels - such as sulfur dioxide - cited as the primary cause.

"With remarkable solar resources and robust economic growth, India has enormous potential for the development of a strong solar industry," said James Hu, Suntech's president for Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa. "We are excited about our partnership with Azure Power and working together to power sustainable economic growth in India for decades to come."
