Fonix Reports 2006 Year-End Results
Thursday March 29, 2:51 pm ET
SALT LAKE CITY--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Fonix Corporation (OTCBB: FNIX - News), specializing in embedded speech interfaces for mobile devices, handheld electronic products, video game systems and processors, announces financial results for the year ended December 31, 2006. The audited financial results also reflect the discontinued operations relating to the Company's former telecommunications business and the cost of issuing securities during 2006.
Year-end company highlights reflect an increase in the number of software licensing agreements from original equipment manufacturers that are expected to be the basis for increased revenue in 2007. The Company, via its subsidiary, Fonix Speech, Inc., has experienced sustained growth in several key market segments in the speech solutions industry, particularly text-to-speech enabled electronic dictionaries and voice recognition interfaces for video games.
Company highlights in 2006 include:
Electronic Dictionaries - Fonix Speech continued to expand its foothold in the Asian e.dictionary market with acquisition of new customers and growth of existing relationships. New handheld e.dictionary models featuring Fonix DECtalk® TTS were introduced by Casio, Huapu, AOnePro and Brilliant System totaling approximately 20 new models by the end of 2006. Market expansion included new Fonix-enabled models in South Korea and China, with continued market growth in Japan. At year's-end, Casio held the number one share of the e.dictionary market in Japan.
Video Games - Fonix VoiceIn® Game Edition, Fonix Speech's award-winning voice recognition interface for video games, was featured in a total of 20 retail games at the end of 2006. Additionally, Fonix Speech added new software tools to its offerings for video game developers including VoiceIn Karaoke Edition, VoiceIn Phonetic Edition and upgrades to the original VoiceIn. Fonix Speech also become a member of Epic Games' Integrated Partners Program (IPP) for Unreal® Engine 3 (UE3). Fonix Speech voice recognition technologies for video games are cross-platform compatible, meaning they are available for Xbox®, Xbox(TM) 360, PlayStation®2, PlayStation®3 and Windows PC platform developers.
Other Technologies - In 2006, Fonix Speech introduced new technologies and upgrades to existing offerings for device, equipment and systems manufacturers including:
Fonix VoiceCompress - VoiceCompress allows application developers and device manufacturers to significantly compress audio files, freeing up device memory for other functions.
Fonix VoiceCentral - VoiceCentral 3.1 is an improved interactive software application for Windows Mobile 5 Pocket PC devices that provides users with "hands-free, eyes-free" device management.
Consolidated revenues for Fonix's comparable continued operations, Fonix Speech, Inc., were $1,329,000 for the year ended December 31, 2006 compared to $1,358,000 in 2005. Operating expenses, exclusive of non-cash charges, decreased from $6,899,000 in 2005 to $6,227,000 in 2006.
"In 2006, Fonix experienced continued organizational changes as we shifted our energies and efforts into expanding revenue opportunities for our speech subsidiary," says Thomas A. Murdock, Fonix President and CEO. "Year-to-date revenues from key Fonix products, namely technologies for e.dictionaries and video games, have substantially increased from this time last year, and we expect this growth trend to continue. This success reflects Fonix Speech's commitment to leveraging existing customer relationships and expanding our presence in those key market niches. By liquidating the telecom group in mid-2006, we have been able to focus on strengthening our speech technology business and better targeting our customer base; and we have every reason to believe that our new business model will result in success going forward."
"Fonix experienced a significant increase in 2006 of the number of OEMs bundling our speech solutions, particularly in Asia," says Roger D. Dudley, Fonix Executive VP and CFO. "In addition to positive customer growth, Fonix has worked diligently to reduce expenses and streamline operations; we expect the results of these actions should be reflected in 2007. In the coming months, we anticipate concentrating our energies on those market segments where Fonix Speech is a proven player in order to maximize revenue potential."

In the complaint Breckenridge asserts statutory claims alleging fraudulent transfers in connection with the incorporation of Fonix Speech as a subsidiary of the Company. The complaint seeks a judgment against all of the defendants in the amount of $1,601,735.00. Concurrent with the filing of its complaint, Breckenridge sought a writ of attachment seeking to attach certain assets of Fonix Speech as necessary to satisfy the judgment of $1,602,000 that Breckenridge obtained against the Company in New York. On May 11, 2007, the court entered an order freezing $93,722 of Fonix Speech operating capital. The court ordered Breckenridge to post a bond of $90,000. Fonix Speech has taken steps to comply with the court's order. The Company intends to vigorously defend against the claims of Breckenridge.

Fonix Video Game Technologies Gaining Momentum
Monday June 11, 9:00 am ET
SALT LAKE CITY--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Fonix Speech, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Fonix® Corporation (OTCBB: FNIX - News) specializing in embedded speech interfaces for mobile devices, handheld electronic products, video game consoles, data base systems and processors, announces increased momentum in sales of its speech technologies for video games.
"During the last few months, Fonix has realized sales revenue for all four of our specialized video game products," says Tim K. Hong, VP of Gaming, Fonix Speech, Inc. "In addition to revenue from voice recognition for video games, we now benefit from increased demand for our other specialized video game products as developers search for specific voice recognition and synthesis solutions that meet particular implementation needs."
Fonix markets a specialized suite of four software solutions for video game developers:
Fonix VoiceIn® Game Edition Fonix VoiceIn is speaker-independent voice recognition that allows developers to add voice command and control to video games, so players can direct game play by speaking. The software is optimized to use very little processing power or memory. Fonix voice recognition adds a fun, interactive player interface.
Fonix VoiceIn(TM) Karaoke Edition With this specialized turnkey solution, Fonix makes it easy for developers to create karaoke-themed games. Fonix voice recognition technology compares the timing, pitch and voice of the karaoke singer to the reference song and reports on the accuracy of the player's singing.
Fonix VoiceIn(TM) Phonetic Edition This new Fonix speech solution is designed specifically for video game animators. VoiceIn Phonetic Edition aligns word phonetics with audio data, allowing animators to more precisely synchronize an animated character's facial movements with the phonetic components of speech. The technology utilizes input text to break down the phonetic components of words. The result is more realistic facial movement as animated characters "speak."
FonixTalk(TM) Text-to-Speech (TTS) FonixTalk TTS software features the industry's smallest memory footprint, making it ideal for gaming applications. FonixTalk's quality of synthetic speech surpasses previous levels and approaches the sound characteristics of a human voice. FonixTalk comes in an array of languages and voices including male, female and child voices.
"We expect video games will be released this year that integrate all of these Fonix products," says Hong. "Some games will be developed and ready for the market with as many as three Fonix gaming solutions in a single game."
"Fonix engineers have optimized our speech technologies to not only improve the quality of the voice recognition and text-to-speech, but also to make it even easier for developers to implement these features into their games," says D. Lynn Shepherd, Senior VP of Product Strategy, Fonix Speech, Inc. "We're delighted to see game manufacturers take these new development tools and utilize them in interesting ways. Games are only getting more engaging, more realistic and more remarkable. Fonix is proud to be at the forefront of this effort by offering cutting-edge middleware that's easily implemented by creative developers. Video game players are the real winners; they will soon be playing games unimagined five years ago."
There are currently 20 retail video games available that feature Fonix speech technology from developers such as Ubisoft, EA Sports, Knowledge Adventure, NovaLogic and others.
All Fonix speech technologies for video game development are available directly from Fonix Speech. Call (801) 553-6600 and say "Sales" for demos and pricing.

Leading Asian Electronic Dictionary Manufacturers Adopting Fonix Text-to-Speech Solution
Tuesday June 19, 9:00 am ET
OEMs Now Delivering E-Dictionaries in Asia and Europe
SALT LAKE CITY--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Fonix Speech, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Fonix® Corporation (OTCBB: FNIX - News) specializing in embedded speech interfaces for mobile devices, handheld electronic products, video game consoles, data base systems and processors, announces unit volume and royalty sales increasing in Asia from Fonix text-to-speech (TTS) solutions for electronic dictionaries.
Electronic dictionary manufacturers incorporating Fonix text-to-speech technology now include Casio Computer Co., Ltd.; Canon; Seiko Instruments, Inc.; Shenzhen Huapu Electronic Technology Co., Ltd.; and several other Asian-based original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). At this same time last year, only one major e-dictionary manufacturer was shipping units with Fonix TTS. Today, six OEMs are shipping units with Fonix TTS, and three additional manufacturers expect to deliver products prior to the end of 2007.
Additionally, dictionaries featuring Fonix's intelligible TTS solution are now sold in over six countries including Japan, China, Korea, France, Germany and the Middle East. The number of units sold YTD has increased more than 155 percent over the same period last year.
"The market reaction in Asia for handheld dictionaries enabled with Fonix speech interfaces has been remarkably positive," says John Shepherd, Director of Asian Sales. "Demand for Fonix technology has exceeded our original expectations for 2007; and sales of e-dictionaries remain brisk throughout the region. By concentrating our sales and relationship-building efforts on key manufacturers of these devices, the handheld 'talking' dictionary market provides a steady increase in recurring quarterly revenue."
In 2007, 39 new device models have been introduced by multiple manufacturers. For the comparable period last year there were approximately 20 models in the market, representing nearly a 100% increase so far this year. Fonix anticipates supplying TTS solutions for five to six additional new models by the end of this year. The Company receives unit royalties from each device sold.
