Welcome to Sandia National Laboratories' website. Sandia develops and applies advanced technology to keep our nation secure and capable of meeting the toughest challenges. Our " passion for our mission" has led to many major national security contributions over our 56-year history, and has also developed technology to improve our lives in a variety of ways. Here are just a few examples:

* Technology that has kept the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile safe and secure for more than five decades. Sandia designs all non-nuclear parts of nuclear weapon systems.
* The PAN Disrupter, a device that disables terrorist-type bombs without detonating them.
* Synthetic aperture radar, an all-weather, day-night imaging system that enables mapping with a precision much greater than previously possible.
* Handheld and unmanned vehicle-carried MicroChemLabTM systems that detect and signal chemical/biological agents for homeland security, defense, and environmental applications.
* The laminar-flow cleanroom, now used worldwide for manufacturing electronics, pharmaceuticals, and for hospital surgery rooms.

Sandia now employs about 8,500 people and manages about $2.3 billion of work annually. We are funded primary by the U.S. Dept. of Energy with other major funding by the Dept. of Homeland Security and Department of Defense, and are managed by the Lockheed Martin Corporation. We regularly partner with other government, industry, and academic institutions to accomplish our work.

The few projects mentioned above barely begin to tell the Sandia story. I invite you to explore our website to learn more and to contact us if you need more information.

Großprojekt in Indien im Kampf gegen Arsen im Wasser.

Project to tackle arsenic in water
Our Bureau / Kolkata September 22, 2005
An amount of Rs 2200 crore has been allocated to eradicate the menace of arsenic polluted drinking water in the state within the next four years under the Bharat Nirman project.

Raghuvansh Prasad Singh, union minister of Rural Development, attending a conference of the state secretaries of the eastern and north eastern region on rural drinking water supply and sanitation said that the centre will provide Rs 600 crore under the 11th Finance Commission and the rest of the amount will be shared according to requirement in the ratio of 1:3 by the state and the centre respectively.

The conference was the first of a series which would be conducted nationally on drinking water supply and sanitation and was flagged off in the city during the course of which two centrally sponsored programmes, the Accelerated Rural Water Supply Programme (ARWSP) and the Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) were reviewed.

There are 5000 habitations (clusters) in the state which are affected by arsenic contamination. There are 2.16 lakh habitations across the country which are under the scourge of polluted drinking water either through arsenic, iron, fluoride or salts.

Nationally, the union minister said that there are 54,000 habitations which are 'not covered' (classified as having provision of less than 10 litres of water per capita) and 'partially covered'(less than 40 litre of water available per capita).

West Bengal is a role model in the rural sanitation sector for all the other states. The state is likely to achieve 100 per cent rural sanitation coverage much ahead of the national deadline of the year 2012 and the Millenium Development Goal's time limit of 2015, Prasad informed.

As per the Nirmal Gram Puroskar Yojna, the national award incentive for 100 per cent sanitation facility and usage of a given block , district or village, West Bengal is the only other state besides Tamil Nadu which in the previous year won for one block and nine Panchayats.

This year, West Bengal has sent petitions for one zilla and 300 Panchayats including Midnapore which would be examined and analysed, Prasad said. The minister also hopes to complete the process of providing clean drinking water and sanitation for all rural schools by March 31, 2006, a year ahead of the Tenth Plan goal.

Control of Drinking Water Quality Strengthened
2005-9-24 12:14:42      CRIENGLISH.com

China's State Council has urged local governments at all levels to ensure the supply of clean drinking water.

The State Council says China's limited water resources are threatened by pollution, and efforts to assure the safety of the water supply within cities are faced by severe challenges. Relevant offices within the State Council are to draft a plan on guaranteeing clean water resources.

The plan will include measures to protect and properly allocate water resources and to establish a drinking water reserve system. Some cities will be directed to speed up their efforts to construct and upgrade water supply facilities.

Intense demand from booming Chinese industries and farms and from the country's sprawling cities - some of them with populations of more than 10 million people - has left many areas of the country without adequate water supplies. In rural areas, the water supply has been found to contain large amount of fluorin, arsenic and the schistosome parasite.

More than 100 of China's 660 cities are reportedly facing extreme water shortages. China supports 21 percent of the world's population with just seven percent of its water supplies.
