MILAN (Thomson Financial) - Italy's Codacons consumer organisation said the Rome prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into complaints filed by Codacons over government injections of cash into Alitalia SpA. According to Codacons, the state has injected 5 billion euros over the last 10 years into Alitalia, an airline which still books hefty losses and which the government is trying to privatise. 'In Italy, it is thought that you can resuscitate companies with state aid and public capital,' said Codacons president Carlo Rienzi in a statement. This state aid just destroys the value of shares of millions of investors who have bought Alitalia shares, he said. Rienzi said reported plans to hive-off Alitalia debts into a separate entity before selling more profitable operations to private investors would also damage individual savers. Codacons is preparing further legal action to claim damages for individual investors in Alitalia if this reported break-up is carried out, Codacons said. Alitalia shares are suspended pending the results of government efforts to relaunch the airline with private investors, though one recent report said relisting would not happen until 2010.
