Gamesa, a global technology leader in wind energy, ended 2013 as the leading wind turbine OEM in Mexico and India by market share and the number two player in Brazil, thereby reinforcing its position in the world’s fastest-growing wind energy markets.

According to the most recent wind report by BTM Consult, Gamesa ended 2013 as leader in Mexico, accounting for over 73% of capacity installed during the year. It also topped the ranks of OEMs in India, outperforming local player Suzlon for the first time, having garnered a share of 19%. Meanwhile, the more than 450 MW installed in Brazil in 2013 earned Gamesa the number two spot on the ranking in this market, with a share of 20%. According to BTM, installed capacity in Brazil, Mexico and India on aggregate is set to grow at an annual rate of over 10% during the next four years.

The Latin American and Indian markets have emerged as Gamesa’s core growth engines in recent years. In 2013, these markets accounted for over 70% of the turbines sold by the company (in terms of capacity). These figures further evidence the company’s gradual international expansion in recent years: sales outside Spain have gone from accounting for just 5% of the total in 2000 to virtually 100% in 2013(in terms of capacity). ....The 18 MW project is part of the framework agreement that Gamesa reached at the end of 2012 with the Finnish company TuuliWatti to supply 135 MW. Of these, 123 MW have already become firm orders: in addition to the Simo wind farm, 54 MW and 36 MW of Gamesa 4.5 MW turbines will be supplied to the Tornio and Pori wind farms, respectively, and 15 MW to the Salo wind farm using 5.0 MW turbines. Last year, Gamesa signed a second framework agreement with the Finnish company for the supply of up to 285 MW of its 5.0 MW turbines.

The growth prospects for the Finnish wind market for the years ahead are among the highest in Europe. According to the latest BTM report, Finland has the potential to install 1,550 MW between 2014 and 2018, a 260% increase over the 428 accumulated MW at the end of 2013. In addition, Finland expects that by 2020, 38% of the country’s electricity consumption will be generated from renewable sources.  

Nach Angaben von Gamesa handelt es sich bei Turbinen um die leistungsstärksten, die bislang überhaupt in Finnland installiert wurden. Der Windpark ist dabei Teil eines Rahmenvertrages über insgesamt 135 MW, der Ende 2012 zwischen Gamesa und Tuuliwatti geschlossen wurde. Inzwischen sind beretis 123 MW des Rahmenvertrages zu festen Aufträgen geworden. Zwei weitere Windparks mit einer Leistung von 54 MW bzw. 36 MW sollen ebenfalls mit den Riesenturbinen von Gamesa ausgerüstet werden. Für den 15 MW großen Windpark Salo sollen dann sogar 5-MW-Anlagen zum Einsatz kommen. In 2013 hat Gamesa darüber hinaus einen weiteren Rahmenvertrag mit Tuuliwatti abgeschlossen. Dabei geht es um 285 MW Windkraftleistung, die in Form der 5-MW-Turbinen geliefert werden soll.

Finnland setzt auf erneuerbare Energien

Spain-based wind turbine manufacturer Gamesa will supply turbines for a 48 megawatt wind project in China. Gamesa is expected to provide Fujian Energy Group Co. with 24 turbines, with delivery slated to begin at the end of September. Construction of the wind farm in the Fujian province will be completed by the end of 2014.

The wind power developer has installed more than 3,500 MW of power capacity and maintains 880 MW in China, according to a statement by the company.

Gamesa said it considered conditions specific to the coastal area of Fujian province and specially designed the wind turbines to be able to endure the weather in the region, which is prone to typhoons and high winds reaching 70 meters per second, reNews reported."In China, the company develops turbines to fit its customers' needs, not only speed wind turbines, but also very high altitude turbines adapted to the low air density and low temperature environment which can be found in the Yunnan-Guizhou provinces beyond 2,000 meters altitude," Gamesa said in a statement.

Growth in sales and rising business volume

Gamesa's revenues amounted to €573 million in the first quarter of 2013, i.e. 17% higher than in 1Q 2013. This improvement is attributable to the sharp increase in wind turbine manufacturing (+16%) and O&M services (+21%).

Sales (567 MWe) were in line with the 2014 guidance (2,200 MWe-2,400 MWe), and 27% higher than in 1Q 2013, reaffirming the return to growth that began in the final quarter of 2013.This recovery was supported especially by the contribution to sales from India (33%) and Latin America (37%); the recovery in the US, which increased its contribution to 21%; emerging markets such as the Philippines, Turkey and Sri Lanka; and sales of the 4.5 MW-5.0 MW platform in Finland. Europe and Rest of World maintained their contribution (7%), which is expected to improve over the course of the year.

O&M services revenue expanded by 21.5%, to 104 million euro, and the EBIT margin was 12.8% (+28.8% vs. 1Q 2013). O&M services account for 18% of total group revenues. ...bringing the order book at the end of March to 1,731 MWe (+20% vs. march 2013); consequently, the company has already covered 74% of budgeted business volume for 2014 (2,200-2,400 MWe).

The company ended the first quarter of 2014 with net profit of 17 million euro (+143%) and EBIT of 34 million euro, i.e. an EBIT margin of 6% (vs. 4.4% in 1Q 2013), in line with guidance for the year (>6%). At constant exchange rates, the EBIT margin would have been 6.6%.

Net financial debt declined by 10% year-on-year to 655 million euro at the end of March 2014. The company continues to focus on strict control of capital expenditure, ensuring a return on investment and a sound balance sheet, thereby reducing its funding needs.

Gamesa announced an end to the four-year EUR 30-million Azimut project, saying that it has been "successfully completed", with a number of advancements having been used in the partners' turbine development.

The initiative brought together ten companies, coordinated by Gamesa, including Acciona, Alstom, Iberdrola, Ingeteam, Imatia, Ingeciber, Digsilent Iberica, Técnicas Reunidas, and Tecnitest.

The project was partially financed by the Strategic National Technical Consortiums (Cenit), a state-run programme....Gamesa said that through the research associated with the project, it developed a new resin with improved properties for the manufacture of blades, as well as a coating that can be applied in wind turbine blades with anti-icing properties and extremely high resistance to erosion.

Gamesa has signed a 100 MW turbine supply agreement with CGN Wind Energy for a wind farm being developed in the province of Yunnan, China.

The turbine maker says the scope of the agreement encompasses the supply and installation of 50 G97-2.0 MW units, specifically configured for high-altitude locations, at the Yangchajie wind complex. Gamesa expects to fulfill the order by the last quarter of this year.

In addition, Gamesa and CGN, a subsidiary of China's General Nuclear Power Group, have agreed to the potential supply of another 100 MW during a second phase of the project in 2015......  

Today in Zamudio (Vizcaya, Spain) Gamesa held its Shareholders' General Meeting, at second call, at which its stockholders ratified the company's 2013 financial and management performance last year, among other motions.

Ignacio Martín, Executive Chairman of Gamesa, briefly overviewed the company's earnings performance in 2013, underscoring its enhanced profitability, having recorded a net profit of €45 million and recurring EBIT margin of 5.5%: "The 2013 results and the recently released first-quarter 2014 earnings evidence the fact that we are on the right track and that the initiatives we have undertaken are the right ones in an environment in which only the fittest will survive".

Gamesa's Executive Chairman explained to shareholders how the company had beaten the earnings guidance provided to the market under the umbrella of its Business Plan, demonstrating its solid performance. "The mid-point of our sales guidance was 1,900 MWe and we delivered sales volume of 1,953 MWe. More importantly, however, we said we would post an EBIT margin of between 3% and 5% and we delivered a margin of 5.5%. The sector hadn't seen such high margins for a long time", he explained. ....

In addition to the company's organic growth, Gamesa's Chairman alluded to the agreement in principal reached with France's Areva for the creation of a joint venture in the offshore segment: "The development of the offshore market requires bigger turbines than today's WTGs and very few companies will be able to make them. Here at Gamesa we are convinced that this alliance will contribute profitable growth in addition to that contemplated in the current Business Plan. Moreover, the agreement will position the joint venture as one of the most important players in the offshore industry while generating significant synergies with our onshore business".

..The Executive Chairman highlighted wind energy's competitiveness as well as its crucial role in reducing nations' dependence on single sources of energy and addressing growing demand for energy in developing economies. Iberdrola-owned ScottishPower obtained planning consent for the £160m ($258m) project in 2007 following a public enquiry.The company said the two-year project will support 150 jobs, and will begin with on-site roadworks to allow delivery of its Gamesa wind turbines.

The creation of the 50:50 offshore joint venture between Areva and Gamesa is scheduled before August this year, according to the Spanish manufacturer."We are working on the due diligence process," a Gamesa spokesperson told Windpower Monthly without divulging further details. The companies announced in January that exclusive negotiations were under way to form a joint venture.

Asked to comment on news reports that Areva has expressed interest in buying the offshore wind division of Alstom and whether this affects the process, Gamesa said: "We are working on the creation of a joint venture with Areva in the offshore segment, and this process continues forward regardless of other possible operations."

In addition to the Bremerhaven turbine assembly plant and Stade blade manufacturing factory, both in Germany, to be brought into the joint venture by Areva, "the venture will fulfil existing industrial development commitments both in the UK and France," Gamesa added.

Areva has now placed its offshore wind sector among "discontinued activities" in its renewable energies business group.

In parallel with their separate due diligence, the companies are working on setting out a framework contract, a shareholder agreement, agreements on the transfer of assets and liabilities, and an agreement on the purchase of critical components, with Gamesa being the preferred supplier.

Following a national public tender process, the French State has selected the group comprising GDF SUEZ, EDP Renewables, Neoen Marine and AREVA (Paris:AREVA) to install and operate offshore wind farms in the areas of Tréport (Upper Normandy, 500MW) and the Isles of Yeu and Noirmoutier (Pays de la Loire, 500MW).

To promote integration and dialogue among all of the partners involved, GDF SUEZ, EDP Renewables and Neoen Marine have incorporated two local companies, one in Rouen (Les Eoliennes en mer de Dieppe-Le Tréport) and another in Nantes (Les Eoliennes en mer de Vendée) and have created a dedicated project team.

The two wind farms will create almost 6,000 direct and indirect jobs. Various local businesses in the Grand Ouest (Poitou-Charentes, Pays de la Loire, Brittany, Upper Normandy, Lower Normandy) and in Picardy and Nord-Pas de Calais will be involved in the manufacturing and installation of the components for the farms.

The choice of the new AREVA 8MW wind turbine will allow for increased productivity and enhanced performance, with a 40% reduction in the number of turbines and greater compatibility with fishing activity. This wind turbine also offers the advantage of cutting construction time and optimising wind farm maintenance.

Uruguay's UTE has earmarked Gamesa, Suzlon and Vestas to supply turbines to three projects totalling 290MW, though contracts have yet to be publicly announced.

The first project, Arias (also known as Colonia Dr. José Arias) in the department of Flores, will comprise 40 Vestas V100-2.0MW turbines, while the 172.2MW Pampa project in Tacuarembo department will comprise 82 Suzlon S95-2.1MW turbines and the 82MW Valentines project in the Florida department will comprise 41 Gamesa G90-2.0MW turbines.

Two companies planning to build wind turbine factories in Scotland are in talks to form a joint venture, which could mean reduced manufacturing plans.Gamesa of Spain and French firm Areva both announced in 2012 they planned manufacturing in the east of Scotland......                                                                                                              Although the UK market for offshore wind developments is expected to become the world's biggest, it is only one part of the new joint venture's global reach. The two main focuses are in northern Europe and in Asia.

The agreement announced on Monday is to negotiate on a 50/50 joint-venture company.

That would allow for joint research and joint efforts in "industrialisation capacity and expertise in the development of a supply chain, both internal and external".
North Sea

The companies expect to combine their efforts in learning from onshore developments and applying them to offshore wind.

Both companies are understood to be in the development phase of creating the nest generation of wind turbine equipment.

Areva, based in Paris, has been in offshore wind since 2004, and is currently installing 120 turbines in the North Sea. It is also a major developer in the nuclear power industry.

In Madrid, Gamesa has been in the wind energy sector for 19 years.

Luc Oursel, president and chief executive of Areva, said: "By choosing to create a European offshore wind champion with GAMESA, AREVA is playing a key role in the consolidation, already underway, of the offshore wind sector, and confirms its long-term commitment to renewable energies".

Ignacio Martin, chairman of Gamesa, said: "This agreement with AREVA allows GAMESA to position itself as a market leader in the offshore wind industry".

Greenko, the Indian developer, owner and operator of clean energy projects, has announced that Phase-2 (50MW) of its Basvanbagewadi wind farm in Karnataka has been commissioned, providing electricity to the grid and selling its power directly to leading global technology companies and commercial customers via an attractive 10-year indexed power purchase agreement.

Including Phase-1 (51.2 MW) and the Mangalore (15 MW) and Matrix (15 MW) projects which have already been commissioned, this takes the total generating capacity at the Basvanbagewadi wind farm to 131.2 MW. It also takes Greenko's total generating portfolio to 611 MW, nearly doubling capacity since April 2013.

Basvanbagewadi Phase-2 ("BB2") is the first project that Greenko has commissioned so far this financial year and brings the Company's total wind power capacity to 298 MW in time for the 2014 wind season, which typically starts in July.

The total cost for Phase-2 was approximately €45 million using Gamesa G97-2.0 MW turbines, which have a 90m hub height, 97m diameter blades and the potential to deliver a better than 30% capacity factor in an average year. The project has immediate access to the grid, as the connection for the site's full capacity of 180 MW was completed in October 2013 ahead of Phase 1's commissioning.
