Lithium Technology Corporation to Develop Highest Power and Highest-Energy Lithium-Ion Battery Solutions

Lithium-ion Technology Advancements Pushes Boundaries and Drives

Energy Solutions for Military and Automotive Industries to Next Level
PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa., Aug. 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Lithium Technology Corporation (LTC) (OTC: LTHU), a global provider of large, rechargeable lithium-ion power solutions, announced the development of two of the largest, highest capacity lithium-ion battery systems in the world for non-nuclear submarines and electric vehicles.

Military: Largest, Highest Capacity Battery System in the World

In a joint venture with ThyssenKrupp, LTC's subsidiary GAIA Akkumulatorrenwerke (GAIA) is in development of a battery system for the ThyssenKrupp's non-nuclear submarine. This battery system will enable propulsion four times longer and safer than lead-acid powered vessels.

Conventional submarines contain lead acid batteries which emit hydrogen-oxygen gases that can cause explosion during operation. The lithium- ion battery is hermetically sealed, making it safer transport for the passengers aboard. While it will be the largest lithium-ion battery solution in the world, the system utilizes less than one-third of the space the standard lead acid battery consumed, allowing more vessel space for other applications. LTC estimates a delivery date of the first quarter of 2008.

"With the necessity to provide more efficient energy solutions, demand is rapidly increasing and LTC's lithium-ion battery systems are the 'key' ... but this is just the beginning," said Dr. Klaus Brandt, executive vice president of LTC and managing director GAIA. "We will continue our commitment to develop advanced solutions that present an effective means for nurturing the future of the energy industry."

Automotive: Plug-In and Power Up for 60MPGs

Currently LTC offers a battery system that powers an HEV up to 50 MPG, the company is constantly developing new innovations enabling their technology to break into the next frontier.

A leading contender in the hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) race, LTC is working in conjunction with an automotive manufacturer to develop a high-power battery management system designed to run a four-passenger HEV capable of 60 MPG, with a range of 60 MPC in electrical mode with zero emissions. This will be the furthest distance traveled by standard production line vehicle.

"The HEV battery will produce 12 kWh, which is about 100% more than what is on the market today for a comparable size battery," said Brandt.

2057 Postings, 7280 Tage Lavati European Hybrid Electrical Vehicle Project

Lithium Technology Corporation ("LTC") (OTC: LTHU), a global provider of large lithium-ion rechargeable power solutions, announced that its battery system was integrated into a four-door demonstration hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) launched today in London. The battery system is the result of collaboration with Zytek, one of the world's leading suppliers of expertise in automotive control systems, powertrain management and HEVs.

LTC subsidiary GAIA Akkumulatorenwerke (GAIA) developed the battery for the vehicle based on the smart forfour (manufactured by DaimlerChrysler), which has an output of 288 V, a capacity of 7.5 Ah (or about 2.2 kWh of energy) and a capability to deliver 25 kW of power. The battery can be charged by either the internal combustion engine (ICE) and by regenerative braking or by household mains (plug-in hybrid). The vehicle has a fuel economy of over 84 mpg and an all-electric range of 20 miles which compares very favorably to the range of HEVs currently on the market.

"This project demonstrates an important step forward in the commercialization of LTC's products and technology in the HEV marketplace," commented Dr. Klaus Brandt, executive vice president of LTC and managing director of GAIA. "We are commited to continuously advancing automotive battery solutions to foster the evolution of the HEV. Lithium-ion batteries are the technology of choice for hybrid and electrical vehicles offering improved performance and cost advantages over conventional technologies, and LTC has proven capability to meet the advanced automotive needs of today and for the future."

Zytek was awarded GBP 1.8 million by the Energy Saving Trust to develop the new HEV. The vehicle utilizes a hybrid power train based on a 1500cc, 3-cylinder turbo charged diesel engine coupled with two high-efficiency permanent-magnet electric motors. This car is part of the "Ultra Low Carbon Car Challenge" project that is supported by the Energy Saving Trust.

The vehicle has combined technology developed by LTC, Zytek and I+ME, for an advanced Battery Management System (BMS). The system is equipped with additional safety features to control the charging of the battery from the mains. The BMS has been designed to communicate with the vehicles' energy management system to ensure enhanced efficiency and control.

"The combination of LTC's advanced battery system and Zytek's innovative hybrid drive train, demonstrates a positive step forward in plug in hybrid technology that is simply applied to any OEM platform, as the system is scaleable and transportable," commented Steve Tremble the Zytek's sales and marketing director.

Lithium Technology Corporation Drives Ahead with Battery Applications for Advanced Automotives

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Advances in lithium-ion battery technology over the past few years, and a shift in the mindset of auto manufacturers, have made hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles (PHEVs) and electric vehicles (EVs) a viable alternative to traditional fuel-powered automotives for the near future, according to officials at Lithium Technology Corporation ("LTC") (OTC: LTHU), a global provider of large lithium-ion rechargeable power solutions. LTC has focused solely on the development and production of large format lithium-ion batteries for more than twenty years and offers solutions today to drive the future.

"There has been a change of mindset within the car industry over the past two years triggered by the success the Japanese have had with the HEV," comments Dr. Klaus Brandt, executive vice president of LTC and managing director of LTC subsidiary GAIA Akkumulatorenwerke (GAIA). "Large lithium-ion solutions have proven to be a technical reality for passenger cars and have achieved respectable performance."

LTC has powered a project in conjunction with Innosys Engineering in which a four passenger Daihatsu Cuore was converted into an electric car using the lithium-ion batteries and a three-phase asynchronous electric motor. The battery, built with cells manufactured by LTC subsidiary GAIA, has a capacity of 25 kWh and an approximate highway range of 180-200km (100-125 miles) at 90-100km/hr (56-60 mph). These results are similar to the expected performance of the recently announced Volt slated to be made available by General Motors in 2010.

"The technology is here today. LTC has it, and we've demonstrated it," says Dr. Brandt. "Price is the biggest factor holding back the production of these more environmentally friendly, fuel efficient vehicles. By committing to work together, the auto manufactures and battery companies can bring the cost down and make cars like the Volt an affordable reality for the consumer."
