Look Out Amazon, Here Comes...Rakuten? Japanese e-commerce firm Rakuten announced on Tuesday it is acquiring Ebates for $1 billion.
The acquisition, which Rakuten hinted at last week, is part of the Japanese company?s push to grow its base beyond its domestic market and hopefully, become a global player. Having made some $1.2 billion acquisitions to date along these lines, this is Rakuten?s most ambitious move to date.
However, investors are dubious that the company can absorb yet another foreign acquisition, much less one the size of Ebates, despite Rakuten?s strong cash position. Then there is the ever-present Amazon, which dominates the e-commerce market in the U.S. Few believe it will falter in the face of Chinese giant Alibaba, much less a Rakuten-Ebates combo.
Rakuten Goes Forth
Not surprisingly, Rakuten says it is undaunted. For starters, it has assembled a very interesting mix of acquisitions. There is messaging app Viber, which it purchased for $900 million in February, the Canadian ebook offering Kobo, Spanish video service Wuaki.tv, Viki, a digital content platform and Buy.com. Now it has picked up Ebates.

Pick and choose the parts for 5G instead of having to rely on Huawei
In particular, the use of OpenRAN enables telecom carriers like Telefónica to pick and choose the parts for their emerging 5G systems from a range of different companies, instead of having to rely on Huawei.
For its part, Rakuten has been making headlines, jumping ahead of competitors as it rolls out a 5G network in Japan.
"I envision our partnership to also co-explore further development around Rakuten Communications Platform that will enable operators around the world to take advantage of cost-effective cloud-native mobile network architecture that is secure and reliable," said Tareq Amin, representative director, executive vice president and CTO of Rakuten Mobile.

The Benefits of an O2O Affiliate Strategy
By Rhiannon Farrar | September 17, 2020 | MARKETING STRATEGIES
Online-to-offline strategies, otherwise known as O2O, have been gaining rapid momentum in the affiliate marketing industry over recent years.
Many may think that this trend is on the decline since COVID-19 sent people around the world into lockdown and rapidly increased the rate of online consumption. Though there is a reason behind this line of thinking, as the 2020 peak shopping period approaches and consumers around the world move through various stages of lockdown, there?s evidence showing that retailers need to now start exploring O2O strategies again.
A recent consumer study by Rakuten Advertising revealed that 57% of global consumers have indicated that they will shop both in-store and online this peak shopping season.
With over 15 million members, Rakuten Rewards is one the world?s largest cash back programs, and to date it has paid out over $2 billion to members across online and offline retail stores in the United States!
In this episode of Let's Talk Loyalty, I interview Kristen Gall, President of Rakuten Rewards, to understand the power of affiliate marketing, their partnerships with American Express and Live Nation - as well as their global sponsorships with FC Barcelona, The National Basketball Association (NBA) and The Golden State Warriors.

Transparency in demand through Everledger
This urgency for truth sparked the Provenance Proof Blockchain initiative, enabled by Everledger technology and run by the Gübelin Gem Lab, the world?s most respected institution for testing and identification of coloured gemstones. ?Retailers and customers have begun demanding information that goes beyond the scientific data that we can provide in the gemological laboratory,? explained Klemens Link, head of development at Gübelin. ?What were the working conditions for the miners? Were they receiving a fair price, so they could feed their families? Without trackability and transparency, there is no trust.?
Rakuten: Revolutionizing The Mobile Operator World Sep. 14, 2020
The company looks undervalued, especially with regards to the Consumer Discretionary plays on basis of the Price to Sales metric. However, due to the high expenses being undertaken in infrastructure development, the company is not seeing consistent operational profitability.
Still Rakuten has two profitable segments which are delivering significant growth and its marketplace services is not restricted to Japan only as it also covers the US and continental Europe together with East Asia.
Japanese telco Rakuten Mobile bets big on India with services, equipment September 21, 2020
Rakuten Mobile appears to be making a much bigger bet on India in the field of IT services and telecom hardware for both its telecom network in Japan and Rakuten Communications Platform (RCP).
Rakuten?s chief technology officer Tareq Amin said that the company wants to make India a ?hub for engineering? and it will be working towards growing enabling the IT and telecom ecosystems.
?If it grows, then I have another supply chain that I can go to and we feel comfortable about,? Amin was quoted as saying by the Economic Times. ?I am personally motivated quite a bit to make India a hub for a lot of the engineering we do.?
The senior executive told the publication that it is going to enter into big partnerships with Indian IT companies and system integrators for its RCP.
The company is already working with IT services company Tech Mahindra and telecom equipment maker Sterlite Technologies Limited in India. While Tech Mahindra is helping Rakuten with its RCP, Sterlite is providing it with Wi-Fi 6 hardware.
?We have a great story in the making of collaboration between Rakuten and the right Indian partners that are really willing and one team to embrace and build indigenous technology in India and create a win-win model for us as Rakuten then and for future business partners in India,? he told the publication.

Purple Personalizes Ads Through Rakuten's Affiliate Network, 'Cross-Publisher Relationships'
March 2, 2020 The affiliate agreement also gives Purple access to Rakuten?s first-party data from its network of companies. The anonymized data not only comes from influencer and blogger, but sites such as Retail Me Not and Ebates, said Julie Van Ullen, managing director of the U.S. and Canada performance network business at Rakuten Advertising.
Ads are personalized based on data. Rakuten?s technology can infer from the data when a consumer wants to make a new mattress purchase in the near future and that they have a higher propensity to buy a Purple mattress. If the data believes the consumer has a higher propensity to buy a mattress, Purple will serve a coupon.
Brohamer said he is also looking into Rakuten?s other ad offerings. Rakuten launched its advertising group in February, drawing on audiences, insights and the well-established performance marketing strategies.
The new company brings together Rakuten Marketing?s affiliate network, programmatic retargeting and prospecting technology with consumer insights from Rakuten Intelligence, as well as a set of global media properties.
: Strong growth of Viber in the Asia-Pacific
Strong growth of Viber in the countries in the Asia-Pacific
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought a lot of uncertainties in many industries. While losses are countless and impactful, the wins though not as many have also provided a ray of hope amid gloomy business forecasts. However, the first half of 2020 brought a new set of experiences for the Rakuten Viber team, but also a new set of milestones, said a press release.
Compared to the 2019 data, Viber has recorded an increase of usage in Bangladesh during the first half of 2020, with a 17% increase in activations, a 21% increase in sending group messages, and 25% in one to one message. The number of messages sent in a group experienced robust growth as well, with a 48% rise, while community Views increased to 77%.
Similarly, the rest of the region experience accelerated activity, especially when it comes to communicating within Groups and Communities. Countries in the Asia-Pacific saw strong growth in the number of messages sent within Viber groups compared to 2019?Myanmar at 41%, Nepal at 67%, Sri Lanka at 91%, Vietnam at 43% and Philippines at 95%. Community Engagement similarly grew, with most countries almost doubling their numbers of Community Views, Myanmar at 106% growth, Sri Lanka at 118%, and Nepal at 195%, respectively. In the Philippines, Community engagement experienced robust growth as well, with a 2.5x increase in community viewers and 2.7x growth in messages sent within Communities.
Was meint Ihr? Wer will evtl. später rein und warum? Vielen Dank
: Rakuten is an important owner of Carousell
Singapore-based B2C and C2C consumer marketplace for buying and selling new and used goods in Singapore Carousell, has struck an investment deal with a consortium led by South Korean internet giant Naver as announced by the startup in a statement dated September 15, 2020.
Following the deal, Carousell will be valued at over US$900 million which will inch the startup to a unicorn status. This is an elevation over the US$850 million valuation the startup achieved in November 2019, after it merged with rival 701Search, then a unit of Telenor.

Huawei Ban Spurs New Competition for Ericsson, Nokia
Bloomberg?September 18, 2020
(Bloomberg) -- The U.S. ban on Huawei Technologies Co. was supposed to hand leadership of the lucrative market for wireless base stations to Ericsson AB and Nokia Oyj. It?s not working out that way. The crackdown on China?s largest technology company has given startups such as Altiostar Networks Inc. and new entrants including Qualcomm Inc. a rare opportunity to grab a slice of the $35 billion the telecom industry spends each year on this crucial part of mobile phone networks.
?This could break up that tech vendor lock-in that?s been around for decades,? said Andre Fuetsch, chief technology officer of network services at AT&T Inc., the third largest U.S. wireless carrier. ?It?s about how do you create a much more competitive, innovative ecosystem.?
Base stations are the heart of cellular networks, powering millions of antennas that perch on cell towers and city rooftops all over the world. Until recently, these boxes were a proprietary combination of processors and software that had to be purchased all at once. Huawei, Ericsson and Nokia account for three quarters of this market, which is worth as much as $35 billion a year, according to researcher Dell?Oro Group.
Open radio access network, or O-RAN, changes this by creating an open standard for base station design and ensuring all the software and components work well together -- no matter who is supplying the ingredients.

Rakuten Beats Australian Competition With Lower Trading Costs As the Australian FX industry becomes more challenging, brokers may have to focus on spreads
Sylwester Majewski | Wednesday, 11/03/2020
The lowest total costs of trading were offered by Rakuten Securities Australia (RSA). The average total cost of transactions on four major FX pairs was equal in the case of Rakuten Securities Australia up to $6 USD. Similar costs for the last-placed broker in the rankings was equal to $11 USD per trade. Rakuten had the lowest costs in all the pairs covered in the research.
The Australian branch of Japanese Rakuten Securities also had very preferable swap points values. In six cases, their offer was more profitable for retail traders than the offer of their competitors. The lowest FX costs of trading offered by RSA may be due to the relationship with their Japanese parent company. Overall, the Japanese retail FX industry remains the largest in the world, representing 1/3 of total global FX retail volume.
