PT union not satisfied with Altice talks
Monday 5 January 2015 | 11:16 CET | News
The Union of Workers of the Portugal Telecom Group (STPT) is not satisfied with the response from Altice over possible downsizing after the company's planned takeover of PT Portugal. In a statement reported by Jornal de Negocios, the STPT said the French company did not say clearly whether any job cuts will be through individual agreements with workers, as previously negotiated at the Portugal Telecom Group. This leaves open the possibility of collective redundancies, the union said.
The union requested another meeting with representatives of Altice to clarify the issues and help the union decide on its position regarding the sale of PT Portugal to Altice. Altice said that it intends to invest in PT Portugal in the long run. In a letter sent to the STPT, Altice said it would honour past commitments with employees of the national operator if the purchase of PT Portugal is concluded.
PT unions want government intervention to prevent sale
Tuesday 4 November 2014 | 17:12 CET | News
The Union of Workers of Portugal Telecom (STPT) has asked for intervention by the Portuguese government to prevent the sale of PT Portugal, reports Diario Economico. The union argues that Altice is a speculative investment fund and recalls that, after its purchase of Portuguese cable operator Cabovisao, about 30 percent of workers were laid off. The reaction follows the presentation of Altice's binding EUR 7.0 billion bid for the Portuguese assets of Brazilian operator Oi. The STPT has also appealed to the president of PT to use his veto power and stop the sale of PT Portugal to Altice.
