Monday August 28, 5:33 pm Eastern Time Press Release Tele Atlas--TeleType Deal Puts European Navigation in Your Pocket BOSTON & BELGIUM--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 28, 2000--A newly-signed deal between Tele Atlas, a world leader in digitized maps, and software development specialist TeleType Co. means detailed mapping data for Europe will shortly become available for use on the emerging generation of hand-held PDAs (personal digital assistants).
The combination of Tele Atlas data and TeleType Global Positioning System (GPS) software will enable users to plot travel on interconnecting highways and right down to street level throughout Europe. In combination with GPS receivers these devices become navigation aids for use in a vehicle or on foot. TeleType Co. recently launched a low-power PCMCIA GPS receiver, complete with GPS software and map information, specifically for this purpose.
TeleType GPS software is a versatile mapping system for land, air, and water navigation designed specifically for Windows(TM) CE computers such as the new Pocket PC. The GPS software uses high quality map data supplied by Tele Atlas, who also supply map data for use in dedicated automotive navigation systems.
``Tele Atlas has the most detailed, up-to-date and comprehensive digitized mapping data of Europe covering 14 countries,`` says Filip Neirynck, Product Manager at Tele Atlas. ``The quality of this database is demonstrated in our market leadership in the European navigation CD market. When this data becomes available for use with GPS software, users will be able to find their way around Europe with ease.``
``The data is sold on CD and is loaded into the hand held via a PC or laptop,`` explains Marleen Winer, Vice President at TeleType Co. ``We have a proprietary data compression technique allowing our program to store several U.S. states including complete street level maps onto one storage flash card.
``Our decision to partner with Tele Atlas is important as it gives us access to the best European digital vector mapping data. This partnership is helping us as we are actively establishing distributors and dealers for our European network to market this new product range.``
