Mining News:
Sundance grows Mbalam DSO resource
Kate Haycock Wednesday, 3 September 2008
SUNDANCE Resources has upped the direct shipping ore grade resource at its much-vaunted Mbalam project in Cameroon to 222.6 million tonnes grading 61.6% iron, bringing the play a step closer to its exploration target of 300Mt of DSO.
The news from the Perth-based explorer adds to the maiden Mbalam DSO resource of 190.2Mt grading 60% iron.
The high-grade DSO comes from the Mbarga deposit, where the latest pit modelling has confirmed mining operations there should have a low strip ratio of 0.2:1, with more than 95% of the DSO resource included within the modelled mine pit shell.
Since releasing that initial resource, the company has also added 1.2 billion tonnes of lower-grade Itabirite hematite ore to its resource inventory, bringing total resources at the project to 1.4Bt.
However, at 39%, the Itabirite hematite will need to be beneficiated to produce a saleable concentrate.
The company is eyeing another 400-600Mt of lower-grade hematite mineralisation at the Mbarga deposit and up to 2.5Bt across the Mbalam project overall.
To raise the DSO resources to the 300Mt target in the meantime, Sundance is looking at three additional targets, including the Metzimevin prospect, the Western flank of the Mbarga deposit, and the Meirdional prospect.
Sundance chief executive Don Lewis said the increase in the resource inventory meant the target was in sight.
He said the deposit was turning out to be a world-class asset and the additional targets reinforced the company’s expectation of tonnage increases.
Eventually, Sundance hopes to export35Mtpa high-grade product from Mbalam.
