ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 28, 2005--Fonix Telecom Inc., awholly owned subsidiary of Fonix Corp. (OTC BB: FNIX) offeringnext-generation integrated communications services to residential andbusiness customers, revealed plans to move to a facilities-basednetwork platform with the installation of a Voice over InternetProtocol (VoIP) switch. The switch will be the key network gatewaycomponent for its new Internet Protocol (IP)-based architecture, whichis expected to be available in the Southeast Q1 2005. Fonix Telecom´s migration to a facilities-based network platformand purchase of a VoIP soft switch enables the company tosimultaneously support legacy "Plain Old Telephone Service" (POTS)subscribers and new VoIP customers. This network platform willposition Fonix to migrate from the dependency upon the ILEC´s(incumbent local exchange carrier) unbundled network elements-platform(UNE-P) and reseller business model. As a facilities-based CLEC, FonixTelecom will decrease costs and increase revenue, while at the sametime providing the capability to maintain end-to-end control ofcustomer services and improve time-to-market for next-generationproducts like VoIP. Additionally, Fonix Telecom will simplify networkoperations and ensure substantial growth potential for future IP-basedservices. Fonix Telecom will also expand the existing network infrastructureby adding points of presences (POPs) in Augusta, Savannah and Macon,Ga.; Charlotte, N.C.; and Charleston, S.C.
