Applied Digital Solutions (ADSX surged more than 12 percent after the Palm Beach, Fla., firm, which announced plans to begin selling its VeriChip implantable radio frequency identification device on Thursday, was the subject of a piece on NBC's 'Today Show' Monday morning. The piece focused on the VeriChip, which is the size of a grain of rice and can be used for a variety of security and medical applications. Scott Silverman, Applied Digital's president, and Keith Bolton, its chief technology officer, were interviewed along with a Florida family that plans to get chips implanted. VeriChip was cleared for sale after the Food and Drug Administration said it doesn't consider the product to be a regulated medical device. Genomic Solutions (GNSL) leapt nearly 16 percent after the Ann Arbor, Mich., seller of automated life science research products said it expects revenue of $6.6 million in the first quarter.
Kenneth Cole Productions (KCP jumped almost 25 percent after the company said that it expects earnings of 26 cents a share in revenue of roughly $92 million in the first quarter, ahead of the previous projections for a profit of 16 to 18 cents a share on revenue of $88 million to $92 million.
Onyx Pharmaceuticals (ONXX leapt almost 18 percent in afternoon action. The stock appears to be getting a lift from an article published in Monday's edition of USA Today that highlights the effectiveness of its ONYX-015 live virus cancer treatment in a recent study. The paper said that the treatment slowed tumor growth safely in 28 of 35 study participants. ONYX-015 selectively infects cells that lack the p53 tumor-fighting gene. The article raises the possibility that it could be used to treat a range of cancers because "up to two-thirds of cancer cells have abnormal p53 function."
IBM (IBM)tumbled more than 10 percent after the company said that it expects to miss Wall Street views for its first-quarter results. Citing a continued slowdown in customer buying decisions and challenging business conditions, Big Blue forecast earnings of 66 to 70 cents a share on revenue of $18.4 billion to $18.6 billion in the period. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial/First Call had been expecting earnings of 85 cents a share on revenue of $19.7 billion, on average.
