G-Mex closing Taxco on low reserves, labor issues (BNamericas.com Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Mexican diversified giant Grupo Mxico (BMV: GMEXICOB) will close its Taxco silver-lead-zinc mine in Guerrero state because all available reserves have been mined, a company communiqu said.
The company said that labor issues at Taxco since 2006, such as strikes by national mining-metalworkers union STMMRM, including the blocking of access to contractors for development and exploration work at the mine, contributed to the decision to close the mine.

Union spokesperson Carlos Pavn Campos responded to the news saying the information regarding the "definitive closing" of the mine because "all reserves were used up" is false and is intended to stir panic and fear among striking miners.
According to Mexican law, the company cannot close the mine while a strike is in effect and a mine closure plan would have to be presented to the labor ministry's federal arbitration and reconciliation council after the strike is over, Campos said in a union statement.

In 2006 Taxco produced 14,346t zinc, 995,000oz silver, and 2,119t lead, earning revenues of some US$42mn.
Grupo Mxico is considering closing its San Martn zinc mine in Zacatecas as well, the statement read.
The company declared force majeure in mid-September on some copper contracts due to strikes ongoing since July 30 at its Cananea copper mine.
The strikes over issues relating to collective contracts, and safety and hygiene, have also paralyzed San Martn and Taxco.
