Feb. 18, 2010 (China Knowledge) - China, which has the world's second-largest power capacity after the U.S., plans to add 85 million kW of new capacity this year, boosting its total capacity to about 950 million kW, according to the latest report by the China Electricity Council.
The council said that the newly added capacity this year would include 55 million kW for coal-fired power, 15 million kW for hydropower, 13 million kW for wind power and 1.08 million kW for nuclear power.
Power consumption in China is expected to grow 9% to 3.97 trillion kWh in 2010, thanks to the economic recovery, according to the report. The country's power consumption last year was 3.64 trillion kWh, up 5.96% year on year.
This year, China will invest RMB 660 billion to upgrade power infrastructure, less than the RMB 755.8 billion spent in 2009.
China saw a net addition of 89.7 million kW of power generation capacity in 2009, and the total capacity reached 874.07 million kW at the end of last year, 10.23% more than a year earlier.
