ALSTOM STARTS OPERATIONS OF UHE MONTE CLARO’S FIRST GENERATING UNIT
January 12th 2005
Upon its completion, in February this year, the plant will generate 130 MW and interconnect the entire northeastern area of the state of Rio Grande do Sul
On January 11th, the first of the two 65-MW generating units of Monte Claro Power Plant was inaugurated. The second unit is scheduled to begin operating in March. When completed, the overall capacity of the hydroelectric power plant will be of 130 MW.
CORAN, a consortium made up by ALSTOM, Camargo Corrêa and Engevix, is in charge of the enterprise.
Camargo Corrêa, the consortium’s leader, was responsible for the civil works, assembling, substation and transmission, whilst Engevix was responsible for the executive design.
ALSTOM was in charge of supplying all electrical-mechanic equipment – two Kaplan turbines, two synchronous generators, hydro-mechanical and lifting equipment, two (three-phase) set-up transformers, two ironclad bus bars and auxiliary electrical, telecommunication and digital systems for Plant supervision and control.
Monte Claro, along with Castro Alves and 14 de Julho power plants, is part of Complexo Energético Rio das Antas – Ceran (Rio das Antas Power Complex) to generate 360 MW at the northeastern area of Rio Grande do Sul, which amounts to 10% the State’s electric power demand.
The enterprise’s shareholders are CPFL Geração, CEEE and Desenvix.
Complexo Energético Rio das Antas (CERAN) will be capable of supplying power to the eight towns directly affected (Bento Gonçalvez, Catiporã, Veranópolis, Pinto Bandeira, Nova Roma do Sul, Nova Pádua, Flores da Cunha and Antônio Prado), as well as to the towns of Caxias do Sul, Carlos Barbosa and Farroupilha.
