Hyundai Strikes US$2 Billion Deal With Russian Firm
Hyundai Motor has signed a US$2 billion deal with Russia’s Rostovskiy Zavod Gruzovih Avtomobiley (RZGA) to produce 77,000 commercial vehicles by 2010, Korea’s largest automaker said Friday. Under the deal, Hyundai will supply technology and parts for the mid-sized County bus, the large Aero Town bus and tractors while RZGA will set up the assembly facilities.
With the help of the deal, Hyundai aims to triple its market share to 15 percent of Russia’s commercial vehicle market with annual sales of 50,000 cars by 2010. The firm, which entered the market in 2000, sold 1,736 commercial vehicles last year, taking up a 6 percent market share.
“The Russian market is experiencing a boom due to increasing petrodollars as oil prices rose,” a Hyundai staffer said. “The deal will help us expand our market share in the steadily-growing Russian commercial vehicle market and secure a bridgehead to attack the markets of the entire Commonwealth of Independent States.”

The commercial branch of Hyundai Motor Co. and the Russian Truck and Car Plant in Rostov-on-Don and Hyundai have signed an agreement on the licensed assembly of commercial Hyundai vehicles at the Russian plant, the Interfax news agency reports quoting Hyundai’s regional headquarters for the CIS and Central Europe.
Investment in the project will total $120 million, Hyundai said.
The plant will mainly assemble buses — the 25-seat County and the 33-seat Aero Town — as well as Hyundai tow trucks.
The Russian Car and Truck Plant is expected to produce its first Hyundai bus on September 15, 2006.
In the first stage, the plant will produce 12,000 commercial Hyundai vehicles per year, before moving up to 35,000 in the future.
