Wild Bunch TV has sold Medici: Masters Of Florence, the new series from Frank Spotnitz’s indie Big Light Productions, to Netflix for the United States, Canada and India.
As TVWise previously reported, this huge deal with Netflix also gives the streaming service exclusive rights to the period drama in the UK & Ireland. Medici: Masters Of Florence will premiere on Netflix in the US, UK, Ireland Canada and India on Friday December 9th.
“I am delighted that millions of viewers will be able to see Medici: Masters of Florence as a Netflix Original Series,” said Big Light Productions Chief Executive Frank Spotnitz. “I was thrilled by the incredible response we got from our Italian audience, and I can’t wait to see how viewers around the world respond.”
Medici: Masters Of Florence tells the story of the Medici family, headed by Giovanni de’ Medici, who founded a powerful bank he entrusted to his sons Cosimo and Lorenzo. The series was created by Frank Spotnitz and Nicholas Meyer and is produced Big Light Productions, Lux Vide Wild Bunch TV and RAI Fiction. The cast includes Richard Madden (Game Of Thrones) and Dustin Hoffman (Luck).
In Italy, where Medici was originally commissioned by public broadcaster RAI, the eight episode series proved to be a hit; breaking Italian ratings records with an an average audience of seven million viewers and 27.34% audience share. The first two episodes debuted with an average of 8.3 million viewers and a 29.4% share. Even before the successful launch of season one, RAI commissioned a second season, which is expected to air in 2017.
