12.09.2008 10:59 Spain gov't wants 500 MW 2009 solar aid cap -lobby
MADRID, Sept 12 (Reuters) - Spain's industry ministry is proposing a 500 megawatt limit on new solar capacity entitled to subsidies in 2009, up from its previous proposal of 300 MW, an industry association spokesman said on Friday.
The new proposed cap for the lucrative state aid, which would need final government approval, is still less than half the current cap for 2008 of 1,200 MW, and falls short of industry expectations, said Tomas Diaz, spokesman for solar energy producers' association ASIF.
The 500 MW proposed by the ministry is split between a 300 MW cap for floor-mounted solar installations and 200 MW for smaller roof-mounted equipment, he said.
'There are already 300 or 400 megawatts of new floor-mounted solar installations which were developed with the current cap on state aid in mind, but will not be completed before the new regulation comes into force,' Diaz said.
'These new developments will fill the quota,' Diaz said, and added that 'until this problem is solved, there is no market (for solar energy).'
The industry ministry was not immediately available for comment.
