Prosecutors: 2-year Stanford trial delay too long Federal prosecutors say 2-year delay in Stanford trial would be too long
. Topics:Legal / Law Matters.Michael Graczyk, Associated Press, On Tuesday January 4, 2011, 3:42 pm EST Federal prosecutors say they won't object to a delay of this month's scheduled trial of former high-flying Texas billionaire investor R. Allen Stanford but argue the two-year postponement sought by Stanford's lawyers is far too long.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Gregg Costa said Monday in a filing with U.S. District Judge David Hittner that defense lawyers should have additional time to prepare but said Stanford's attorneys already have filed motions covering most conceivable legal issues in the case. Costa said a two-year delay would be inconsistent with a speedy trial for Stanford.
Hittner has scheduled a hearing for Thursday on claims from Stanford's lawyers that their client is mentally incompetent.
Stanford, accused of bilking investors out of $7 billion in a Ponzi scheme, was supposed to go on trial Jan. 24.
